Tesla Key Card Unlock Fix
Troubleshoot a Tesla that will not unlock with the key card, including correct card placement, phone backup unlock, card inspection, vehicle reboot, and re-adding the card in Controls.
Before you start
- Do not pry or force the door handles if the car stays locked.
- Keep a charged phone with the Tesla app or a spare authenticated key before you start so you are not locked out.
- Avoid bending, punching, or placing the key card next to strong magnets or phones for long periods.
Tools
- Smartphone with Tesla app
- Optional second working key card or key fob
Parts
Replacement Tesla key card if the original is damaged or demagnetized
- 01
Confirm the failure and on-screen prompt
Stand at the driver door and hold the key card flat against the pillar reader (B-pillar), centered over the Tesla logo area. Wait a full second. If the car stays locked and the screen shows a top key card unlock style prompt, treat this as a card-read or auth failure rather than a dead 12V alone.
- 02
Place the card correctly on the B-pillar
Orient the card flat, logo facing you or as your model expects, and press it firmly against the upper driver B-pillar reader. Hold still for one to two seconds. Try a second spot slightly higher or lower on the same pillar if the first tap does nothing.
- 03
Unlock with the phone key as backup
Open the Tesla app on a paired phone with Bluetooth on and the phone unlocked. Use Unlock from the app controls, or walk up with Phone Key enabled so the handles present. Once inside, leave the phone in the car so you can complete the remaining checks.
Do not close all doors and walk away until you confirm a working unlock method.
- 04
Inspect the key card
Check the card for cracks, warping, water damage, or a peeled RFID area. Compare against a spare card if you have one. If only one card fails and the spare works on the same pillar, retire the bad card and order a replacement from Tesla.
- 05
Retry after removing interference
Take the card out of any thick wallet, metal case, or stack of other RFID cards. Keep phones and MagSafe-style magnets away from the card and the pillar while you tap again. Retest a clean single card on the driver B-pillar.
- 06
Power-cycle the vehicle cabin systems
With the car unlocked and in Park, use Controls then Safety (or Service) and select Power Off. Wait at least two minutes without touching the brake or screen. Sit in the seat, press the brake to wake the car, then retest the key card on the B-pillar.
- 07
Re-add or test the key card in Controls
On the touchscreen go to Controls, Locks, then Keys. Confirm whether this card still appears as an authenticated key. If the UI allows, remove a stale entry only if you still have another working key, then add the card again by following the on-screen hold-on-console or reader instructions for your software version.
Do not delete your last working phone key or card until a new key is confirmed.
- 08
Verify lock and unlock end to end
Exit the car with the phone key off or left inside only if a known-good card is in hand. Lock from the app or pillar, then unlock only with the repaired or replacement card on the B-pillar. Confirm both front doors and that the card still works after a short walk-away.
