Pittsburgh Digital Caliper Disassembly
Battery swap and display-head teardown for Harbor Freight Pittsburgh composite and stainless digital calipers. Covers the LR44 cell, oxidized contacts, and the capacitive scale that makes the digits freeze or blank.
Before you start
- Do not flood the scale with water. Capacitance readers die from residue, not from a dead battery alone.
- The glass/PCB scale is easy to scratch. Wipe, do not grind.
- Zero the caliper on a closed pair of jaws after every battery change before you trust a reading.

- Small Phillips #00 or jeweler’s screwdriver
- Plastic pick
- LR44 / SR44 battery
- Isopropyl alcohol

Confirm it is the cell, not the scale
If the LCD is blank, flickering, or only lives while you squeeze the body, start with the battery. If it reads but jumps or refuses to zero, the capacitive strip is dirty and you will open further.

Open the battery door
On most Pittsburgh 6-inch units the cover is on the top of the display head: a sliding cap, or a single tiny screw. Slide or lift it toward the beam. Note the cell orientation — the printed side usually faces the spring.

Replace LR44 and clean the contacts
Pop the spent cell. If the spring or pad is dull or green, rub with a pencil eraser, then a drop of ISO on a swab, then dry. Fit a fresh LR44/SR44. A cheap alkaline cell is why these ‘die’ every few months; a silver-oxide SR44 lasts longer.
Do not let the new cell short across both contacts while you fish it in.

Deeper teardown if digits still fail
Remove the depth rod if it blocks the bezel. Back out the bezel screws and lift the cover. The reader PCB rides the beam; do not peel it off the scale. Wipe the exposed scale with ISO until it sheets clean. Reassemble square so the reader cannot rock.
Skip ultrasonic on the electronics. ISO on a swab only.

Zero and check a known block
Close the jaws, press ZERO. Measure a 1-2-3 block or a gauge pin if you have one. If the reading walks as you move along the beam, the scale is still contaminated or the reader is cocked. Re-seat and try again before you scrap the tool.
