Before you start

  1. 01

    Prep the bench and lens

    Fit front and rear caps only when moving the lens. Clear a clean padded area and lay out trays for rings in removal order. Blow loose dust from the exterior before any ring comes off. Note the exact mount and aperture feel so you can compare after reassembly.

    Static and dust ruin coatings. Keep airflow gentle.

    Remove exterior trim and name ring

    Peel or unscrew the front name ring with a rubber friction tool. Many Nikkors use a thin threaded or friction name ring ahead of the front group. Set the ring aside face up so lettering orientation is obvious later. If a thin filter-thread ring remains, note its thread direction before the spanner goes on.

    Release the front group retainer

    Engage a lens spanner in the front retaining ring slots. Turn the retainer the correct direction for its thread until it lifts free. Lift the front element or group straight out and park it on lens tissue. Stack any spacers in the exact order they came out.

    Spanner slip scratches brass and glass. Keep tips seated.

    Open the rear and free the rear group

    Remove the rear cap and any rear baffle or retainer visible from the mount side. Back out mount screws only if your variant needs the bayonet off to reach the rear stack. Lift the rear group straight out and keep it oriented the same way it sat in the barrel.

    Do not mix front and rear elements.

    Mark and separate the focusing helicoid

    Set focus near infinity or the stop you can repeat. Mark the inner and outer helicoid with pencil so the start thread mesh is obvious. Unscrew the helicoid slowly and count turns if needed until the barrels part. Bag the male and female parts together with your mesh notes.

    Lost mesh means stiff or locked focus on reassembly.

  6. 06

    Access the aperture section

    With groups out, locate the aperture actuator and blade cage. Remove only the retainers your variant uses to free the blade unit. Note spring hooks and lever orientation before anything jumps free. Do not oil the blades.

    Aperture blades stick permanently if grease reaches them.

  7. 07

    Inspect, clean, and stage for reverse assembly

    Blow and tissue-clean glass only as needed. Check rings for burred slots and replace damaged retainers. Relube helicoids sparingly with optics-safe grease if that is the goal of the service. Reassemble in reverse order, restoring helicoid mesh to your marks, then confirm smooth focus and snappy aperture before final tighten.
