Before you start

  • The LCD ribbon is not a ZIF you can yank. Note the lock tab before it comes free.
  • Hinge springs can jump. Bag them as a pair with their orientation marked.
  • A swollen battery gets no second chance — replace, do not puncture.

Tools

  • Tri-wing Y00
  • Phillips #00
  • Spudger
  • Tweezers
  • Isopropyl alcohol

Parts

Outer shells · Hinge barrels · 32×32 mm Li-ion battery · LCD ribbon · Shoulder buttons and membranes

  1. 01

    Strip the tri-wing screws

Battery cover first (one screw), then the remaining tri-wings on the bottom shell. Some are longer and sit near the hinge — map them as they come out. The cartridge slot side has a hidden screw under a rubber foot on some revisions.

  2. 02

    Lift the bottom shell

The board stays with the top half. Lift the bottom away and collect the shoulder buttons, membranes, and LED lens so they do not bounce into the carpet.

  3. 03

    Unplug the battery

The white JST-style connector pulls straight back. If you are here for a battery-only job, stop after this step and reverse. A puffy cell is done — do not flatten it to reuse the shell.

  4. 04

    Free the LCD ribbon

Open the display. Unlock the ribbon connector (the tab flips or slides depending on board revision) and slide the flex out. Only then remove the hinge screws. Forcing the hinge with the ribbon attached tears the traces at the fold.

Take a photo of the connector before you touch it. Lock tabs are easy to break off.

  5. 05

    Hinges and reassembly

Drive the hinge barrels out in the factory direction. Reverse to rebuild: hinges, ribbon seated and locked, battery, membranes, shells, tri-wings. Power on before you install every last screw so a bad ribbon seat is cheap to redo.
